Repairs

If you’ve dropped your iPhone or iPad and damaged it then it can be repaired. If you dropped it down the loo, as many customers have done, then it would probably be best if you’ve had it insured!

Replacing cracked screens, LCDs, batteries, buttons etc doesn’t mean it’s death for the device, but replacing a logic board puts it in jeopardy as the repair-to-value equation becomes marginal at best, depending on the model, if it’s even possible.

See “bag of rice page” for more info.

Need to change providers on a locked contract phone? The best solution by far is to go back to your provider and ask them to unlock it for you.

Jailbreaking and unlocking is not illegal, breaking your contract, however, is likely to result in paying out more money than waiting out and paying your contract in the normal way. It does take a while to do the jailbreak AND unlock - can’t unlock without doing the jailbreak first unfortunately. It can be done with a Gevey Sim

Thanks to the intervention of the European Union, and we don’t have much to thank them for, the relevant EU directive essentially says that breaking "technical protection" (i.e. DRM) on software is fine, as long as you're not doing it for the purposes of infringing copyright (i.e. playing pirated games).

But that's Europe. In the UK, we no longer have to ratify all of these EU directives before they become law, but the British lawmakers transposed the EU directive into British law, in the "Copyright and Related Rights Regulations 2003". That says essentially the same thing -- that it's okay to break these "technical measures" for interoperability reasons, but not for the purposes of infringing copyright.
