Apple batteries
Firstly, let me say that I am not at all happy with the way that Apple is messing around with the iOS software that prevents third party chargers and cables that have been working perfectly well for weeks or months only to flash up a message saying that “this cable or accessory is not certified…” or similar,
It wouldn’t be so bad if Apple didn’t charge ridiculous amounts of money for cables and chargers – £15 for a USB cable that costs them 5¢? That’s obscene to say the least.
One thing that I’ve found recently is that if you’re not using an “original” cable then Apple chokes down both the charging rate and the data transfer rate. My M1 Pro 16” drops from 135w to 87w if I switch cables… is it legal? Who is going to stop them? This is the same sort of crappy service that we’d expect from Microshaft, but Apple have taken it to another level.
As for batteries in phones? They’re starting to do the same with those now in the iPhone 11. They charge £89 for a replacement battery that is nothing special, but it does have some firmware that is recognised by the OS that isn’t in the third party batteries. This has prevents battery heath status being shown. It’s not that it isn’t there, it’s because Apple wants to force you to pay stupid money for a battery that costs them $1 or less.
Does that mean that you should drive to Cambridge, with all the petrol and parking charges, get ripped off for £89 to avoid that? No, if you want to check the status, download Coconut Battery connect it to your Mac and it will give you more information than Apple ever would.
On to Macbook batteries.
Apple like to charge you £159 up to £245 for your battery replacement in newer Macs, and, disgustingly, refuse to replace batteries at all in most older ones.

The worst case I’ve come across was refusing to change a battery in a 2013 Macbook Air, claiming that they don’t have the tools tor the battery to do it.
So why is this disgusting? Because they’ll happily charge £159 for a new battery for the 2017 and that is EXACTLY THE SAME AS THE 2012/13/14/15&17! Basically, the “geniuses” in the Apple Store are PAID TO LIE TO YOU!
